Dr. Ken Cornell and co-investigators Dr. Henry Charlier and Dr. Dee Ann Force recently received a $77,800 grant entitled "21st Century Biochemistry Lab: Making Sense of ORF's in the Post-Genomic Era" from the State Board of Education This grant will fund biochemistry lab curriculum projects in FY 2009.

The State Board of Education also recently funded a $99,700 grant for the "Going Green: Environmental, Economic, Efficient Organic Chemistry Lab Curriculum Project" submitted by Dr. Eric Brown, special lecturer Karen Hammond, Dr. Mike McCormick, Dr. Owen Mcdougal (PI), and Dr. Don Warner. This grant will fund organic chemistry lab curriculum projects for FY 2009.

Dr. Owen McDougal received a Cottrell College Science Award grant of $45,000 from Research Corporation for "Design, Synthesis, and Biological Testing of Novel and Selective Antagonists of Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylchlorine Receptors." This grant funds the research efforts of Dr. McDougal.

Daniel Quapp and Tony Martinez received travel grants from the AAAS Pacific Division to attend the 89th Annual Meeting in Waimea Hawaii (June 15-20, 2008). Both students will present talks during symposium on Progress in Drug and Vaccine Development. Quapp will present "Intersecting Recycling Pathways: Biochemical Analysis of E. histolytica MTA Nucleosidase as a Target for Antiparasitic Drug Development," while Martinez will present "Reconstitution of Autoinducer II Effects in E. coli MTN knockout strains."

Tony Martinez was awarded the MSTMRI fellowship for 2008. Ryan Fox (Biology) was also awarded an MSTMRI.

Chemistry Major Briana Flaherty selected as top ten scholar for 2008 graduating class! Congrats to Briana!

Dr. Jeunghoon Lee, postdoctoral fellow from Northwestern University, has been hired as a new faculty member for the Department of Chemsitry and Biochemistry at Boise State University. Dr. Lee's research interests include chemical synthesis of semiconductor nanoparticles, nanofabrication of metal nanoparticles, and assembly and optical properties of nanoparticles for optoelectronics and biological applications. We welcome Dr. Lee!

The Council of Undergraduate Research " Posters on the Hill" annual meeting in Washington D.C. invited Boise State Chemsitry to present posters to U.S. senators and congressmen. Boise State Chemistry was one of only 60 applicants nationwide to be invited to the event! In attendance were faculty memebers Dr. Owen McDougal and Dr.Don Warner, Boise Technology CEO and research collaborator Dr. Michael Hill, alumni Taylor Dixon, and students Jaime Montgomery, Kate McHail, and Lisa Young. Speakers at the event included Dr. John H. Marburger III, Senior Advisor to the President and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Bruce E. Bersten, President of the American Chemical Society, and Samuel W. Bodman, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary.
