Water is a polar molecule because there is a large difference in the electronegativity of oxygen and the electronegativity of hydrogen...these bonds are very polar...and it has a bent molecular geometry...tetrahedral electron-pair geometry. The oxygen atom is sp3 hybridized (tetrahedral) because the oxygen atom is bound to two hydrogen atoms and has two pairs of non-bonded electrons. Remember that electron pairs occupy space and repel other electron pairs and atoms. Therefore they must be in hybrid orbitals.
