Mercury (named from the planet Mercury) is the 80^th element and comprises only 0.000002% of the earth's crust.  It is an unusual metal in that it is a liquid at room temperature.  It is used in electrical switches, mercury vapor lamps (it imparts a blue color), thermometers and barometers.
