The ethylene glycol added to an engines cooling system lowers the freezing point to a point that will keep the water in the radiator from freezing in the winter. Airplane deicers also use ethylene glycol although it is being phased out. The problem with ethylene glycol is that it has a sweet taste and animals and birds like the taste. It is very toxic so the animals will die if they lick up too much.
Sodium chloride is placed on sidewalks and roads to melt ice or prevent water from freezing. Calcium chloride is also used for this purpose and actually supplies three particles for each molecule that is used, one calcium ion and two chloride ions.
