This answer is not correct. You are correct in that both the alcohol and the carboxylic acid react with thionyl chloride to form the alkyl chloride and the acid chloride. Acid chlorides are very susceptible to nucleophilic attack even by weak nucleophiles such as alcohols. Alcohols are not a strong enough nucleophile to react with alkyl halides. There is a better answer.
