Nomenclature of Ketones

a. Ketones are named by dropping the -e ending of the parent name and adding -one.

The substituent name for the O= group is oxo. Ketones can also be named by naming each of the two carbon groups as a separate word followed by a space and the word ketone.

d. The Greek letters a, b, g, etc. are used at times to designate attached groups on the second, third and fourth, etc. carbons from the carbonyl. This nomenclature is common for many functional groups such as aldehydes, carboxylic acids and derivatives of carboxylic acids.
